Ludlow Mansion
Monroe is home to over a dozen of the major cheese producers in the country if not the world. Monroe is the only place in North America that still makes Limburger Cheese. The builder and namesake of the Ludlow Mansion, Arabut Ludlow, envisioned before most the importance of cheese to Monroe. His vision helped stop a revolt in the community when he gathered the cheesemakers at the Mansion and paraded them into the downtown square and make a speech from the courthouse steps declaring that cheese was the smell of money for Monroe and it would put Monroe on the map for generations to come. That event is thought by many to have been the vision and inspiration for what is now Cheese Days in Monroe.
