Port Washington, Little City of Seven Hills, was founded in 1835 and became a primary harbor on Lake Michigan’s western shore as well as the first man-made harbor in the country. Historically a fishing community, it is appropriate that charter fishing continues to be a big industry in Port Washington. Sailors also use the marina and welcome its easy access to the town. Many enhancements were made to the marina in the 1990's, making it a more popular place for residents and visitors to stroll and picnic.
Tall Ships are welcomed into Port’s harbor, a reminder of days gone by when shipping vessels arriving in the port numbered in the hundreds. Lake Michigan’s penchant for fast brewing storms has led to tales of shipwrecks along these shores. The restored historic lighthouse is now a museum safeguarding much of this heritage for posterity.
