Reedsburg, in southwestern Wisconsin, is situated half-way between Chicago and Minneapolis and is a short 30 minute drive to Baraboo, Spring Green, and Wisconsin Dells.
While nearby Wisconsin Dells – the Waterpark Capital of the World – often grabs the spotlight, Reedsburg’s natural wonders shine just as brightly.
Wisconsin's Driftless Region
Formed by the meeting of two glaciers, the lake and bluffs of Devil's Lake State Park invites scuba divers, canoeists, hikers, rock-climbers, and in winter, cross-country skiers with groomed trails – try a moonlight ski. Mirror Lake state park is the site of the Seth Peterson Cottage designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; it’s open to the public the second Sunday of the month from 1-4 p.m. for a $2 admission. Here’s a tip from Tom & Donna, the innkeepers at Parkview B&B: “One of our favorite canoe trips is to start below the park in Dell Creek, canoe through Mirror Lake and up to the dam at Lake Delton. There are some beautiful sandstone bluffs along the way.”
Bike a "Century"
Biking is legendary in Reedsburg, starting with the 400 Trail – named for the distance between Chicago and Minneapolis. The 400 Trail follows the Baraboo River 22 miles to Elroy where the Elroy/Sparta Trail begins. Up for a challenge? Bike 4 Trails - add the LaCrosse River Trail and the Great River Trail for a total of 101 miles.
Theatre to Cranes to Cats
Outdoor activities don’t always involve a bike or a hike. American Players Theatre (30 minutes to Spring Green), named Best Company of the Year 2011 by Wall Street Journal theater critic Terry Teachout is an outdoor amphitheater with 1147 seats under the stars. Very near APT is Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin; tour the grounds or enter some of the buildings. The International Crane Foundation between Baraboo and Wisconsin Dells is the only place like it in the world where you can see all 15 species of cranes. At the Big Cat Rescue Center in Rock Springs you can view these incredible animals, help with feeding and more.
Cheese and Wine
Wisconsin and cheese are a natural combination. Carr Valley Cheese Factory outside LaValle, is about 12 miles from Reedsburg. Sid Cook, owner, is a master cheese maker and the most awarded cheese maker in the country! And while we’re on the topic of awards, Wollersheim Winery (30 minutes from Reedsburg) – celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012 - was just named the San Diego International Wine Competition’s 2012 Winery of the Year. Tours are available. The scenic Driftless Region of this Southwest Wisconsin winery will have you saying, “Napa…what?”
Reedsburg is “Rockwell-esque” with cafés and shops like the Deli Bean, The Coffee & Candy Connection, and Greenwood’s Cafe. A cozy Italian restaurant, Calabria, is joined by a variety of dining choices including a steak house, Irish Pub, Mexican, and Chinese restaurants.
