The Village of Soldiers Grove is located about one hour south of LaCrosse, in the scenic Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin. The village is on the Kickapoo River, located about midway on that longest tributary of the Wisconsin River. The Kickapoo Valley is about 1000 square miles of natural beauty. It contains no city of more than 1000 residents. It consists of heavily forested hills and green, green valleys. It is home to endangered species (like the Kentucky Warbler), unique ice caves, Amish communities, and dozens of Class 1 trout streams.
Soldiers Grove is home to a big Dairy Days celebration on Father’s Day weekend each year. The weekend includes live music, great food, tractor pulls, sports tourneys, and even a kids rodeo. On the third weekend of September the village park is transformed into an art-lovers paradise. The Driftless Area Art Festival has become one of Wisconsin’s premier art shows. The juried art is offered by more than eighty artists of the Driftless Area. Live music reverberates from the nearby hills and the park is full of residents and guests enjoying the art, the music, the food, and the natural setting of the Kickapoo Valley.
Soldiers Grove is America’s First Solar Village, and has about twenty commercial buildings constructed around 1980 that incorporate passive solar heating. Two war memorials honor the area’s war veterans; the first portion of a planned 100 mile Kickapoo River Trail has been started in the village; the orchards of Gays Mills lie only a few miles to the south and offer great late summer and fall apples to thousands who have flocked to those orchards for more than 80 years.
When you’re in Soldiers Grove stop at Country Gardens Restaurant, right on Highway 61 for some of the best food to be found in the Kickapoo Valley. Also stop by the Village of Gays Mills and see how that village is recovering from devastating floods by rebuilding on higher ground. A beautiful new community center, mercantile building, and family residences now replace the worn out, flood ravaged buildings that used to sit right on the river.
Finally, it must be noted that Soldiers Grove is the B&B capital of Wisconsin. It is a village of 500 residents that is home to three B&Bs – a concentration that is 60 times greater than the state average.
