Stoughton, a small town 20 minutes south of Madison, may be best known for its Syttende Mai celebration. What’s that?  The Norwegian Syttende Mai – we’d say May 17, is held the weekend closest to May 17th to mark Norwegian Independence Day.  Of course, Norwegian ethnic foods take center stage, and fuel the Syttende Mai Run Walk on Saturday.
There’s a celebration for nearly every season in Stoughton: around July 4th is the Stoughton Fair, the second Saturday in August is Coffee Break, and the first weekend in December is the Victorian Holiday Weekend.
A river runs through it – that is, the Yarhara River goes right through Stoughton.  Great for canoeing.  Swimming in the Mud Hole, a man-made sand bottom pool in Manthe Park is cooling on a hot summer day.  And when winter arrives, Cross Country Ski at Lake Kegonsa State Park – and X-C by candlelight the second Saturday of January and February.
The 475 seat Stoughton Opera House, one of the few 2nd floor opera houses remaining in the country, presented vaudeville reviews and concerts in its early years. Now, shows range from the Smothers Brothers, Arlo Guthrie, The Wailing Jennys to the hip venues that put the Stoughton Opera House on the Isthmus’ favorite concerts list http://www.isthmus.com/daily/article.php?article=31830 .
Stoughton’s bed and breakfasts are welcoming alternatives to Madison hotels or Janesville hotels (about 30 minutes south), and pair nicely with Laz Bistro, a great little local restaurant specializing in Kansas City BBQ.
