Westby, located in the heart of the Southwest Wisconsin's Driftless Area, is 25 minutes southeast of La Crosse and 23 minutes south of Sparta.
The long and winding road … rivers…and trails
In Wisconsin's Driftless area, you’re not likely to drive, paddle, or hike a straight route – all the better to take in the scenery untouched by the ice age. The 125 miles of the crooked, winding Kickapoo River - the longest tributary of the Wisconsin River - covers only 65 miles in distance. Perfect for canoeing and kayaking. 52 miles of Highway 35 along the Mississippi River and Bluffs are part of the 250-mile Wisconsin Great River Road. Marie Cimino, innkeeper at the Westby House Inn says “Take the Driving Tour I’ve mapped out to explore the area's Driftless Region of steep hills, deep valleys and rivers.” Wildcat Mountain State Park has 3603 acres, offering mostly wooded exact hiking trails. Need more to explore? Try the Kickapoo Valley Reserve’s 8569-acre natural area trails.
Ski-jump, ski, run, bike, fish, golfBesides the ‘agony of defeat’ clip from Wide World of Sports, have you ever seen ski jumping? Catch the Annual International Snowflake 108K Ski Jump Tournament held first weekend of February. This 5-jump facility (the largest is a 118 meter Olympic-sized hill) is used for national and international competitions. For those who prefer to keep their skis on the snow, there’s downhill skiing on Mount LaCrosse. In warmer weather (usually) the Syttende Mai 5K Run/Walk is held on Saturday of Festival weekend closest to May 17th. On the first Saturday of October, the Dam Challenge Triathlon at Kickapoo Valley Reserve is held. Spanning spring-summer-fall, bikers pedal the 20-35 miles of the Elroy-Sparta Trail through at least one of three tunnels. The Westby area has over 200 miles of top-rated trout streams…a fly-fisherman’s paradise. Golfing? Yes – back at the Snowflake Ski Golf Course.
