Theatre in the Open

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

You’ve heard of theatre in the round.  How about theatre in the forest.  Or in a tent.  Or on a lakeshore.  In Spring Green, the American Players Theatre is world renowned for its classical theatre performed under the stars in an amphitheater on a hill with trees all around.  In Door County, the Peninsula Players is America’s oldest professional resident summer theater, and there’s also American Folklore Theatre with musicals that are often Wisconsin-themed, and Door Shakespeare which stages its performances in a garden.  Lake Superior’s Big Top Chautauqua, Bayfield,  has a full summer season of plays and concerts and, yes, they are performed under a big tent.  In Mineral Point, there’s Alley Stage, and in Milwaukee the Peck Pavillion on the lakeshore has lots of free events.  Get outside, take a seat, enjoy the show, and then return to the B&B of your choice, knowing our member inns are also famous for receiving rave reviews.

Mineral Point is known for its artist’s community and artisan shops … just a short stroll from Brewery Creek. As its name implies, Brewery Creek is more than an historic inn – it’s a brew pub, and restaurant known for a locally sourced menu.

We’re Having a Heat Wave in Wisconsin

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

It seems summer temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s are now the norm for Wisconsin.  If you wilt without central air, rest assured there are plenty of cool and comfortable B&Bs in the state that fit the bill.  Another way to chill out is to book a waterfront B&B.  For B&Bs on lakes, try At the Lake House – Lake Geneva, Quiet Cottage on the Lake – Sturgeon Bay, Escape by the Lake – Hudson, Lake Orchard Farm – Sheboygan, Lake Ripley Lodge - Cambridge, and Lakeside B&B – Florence.  We suspect you’ve picked up on the theme!  Inns with river access include Mecan River House – Coloma, Riverside Manor – Marinette, and Riverview – Neshkoro.  Gee, we’re feeling cooler already!

Picture yourself cooled by Lake Michigan breezes while breakfasting at Quiet Cottage on the Lake in Sturgeon Bay (Door County). The French doors of the one private suite - yours - open to the deck and lakeshore. Bird-watching, shoreline stroll, s'mores, in-room massage ... just ask innkeeper Debby!

Wisconsin Hosts U.W. Women’s Open, B&Bs Host Golf Fans

Monday, June 25th, 2012

The U.S. Women’s Open is back at Blackwolf Run Golf Course in Kohler July 2-8. According to the course web site, Blackwolf Run is regarded as one of Pete Dye’s crowning achievements.  It’s played host to the Andersen Consulting World Golf Championships in 1995, 1996 and 1997 as well as the historic 1998 U.S. Women’s Open, with the U.S. Women’s Open returning for the second time.  There’s a nice variety of Wisconsin B&Bs near Kohler, if you want to stay and play the course yourself.  Just click on the Eastern Waters & Door County region on our map. For something farther northwest, Canyon Road Inn in Turtle Lake is now offering a golf package.  And check out our Golf Map to see courses in the state and nearby B&Bs.  We’d help you with your swing too if we could!

Golfers and non-golfers can stroll these greens at Canyon Road Inn, Turtle Lake. Innkeepers Patti and Turner assure you "we do all the work - you just enjoy"!

Marathoners Make a Beeline to Wisconsin B&Bs

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Here’s a trend that’s coming on strong – amateur athletes choosing Wisconsin B&Bs when traveling for 5Ks, half-marathons, marathons, sprint triathlons, adventure races, well, you get the gist.  Makes sense when you consider B&Bs are in a rather unique position to customize just about anything a “weekend warrior” would need to be in peak condition for the competition.  In Door County, the Door County Lighthouse Inn offers to-go nourishment for the athlete and coffee cake for the athlete’s support team.  At the Hamilton House B&B in Whitewater, innkeeper Kathleen Fleming says the runners who participate in the Ice Age 50 and Kettle 100 may schedule a massage with the inn’s massage therapist, but most take ice baths in the inn’s huge tubs after the race!  If you’re heading to Oshkosh for the August 5 Olympic and Sprint Triathlon, the Brayton B&B has upscale bath amenities and beds to provide great comfort after the race.

Could there possibly be a better way to unwind after a race? (we'll include the rat race too!) Innkeeper Kathleen at the Hamilton House B&B in Whitewater says it's your choice of whirlpool therapy - steaming soothing bubbles or tingling ice for sore muscles.

When is Breakfast in Bed a Guilt-Free Pleasure?

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Admit it, breakfast in bed is a guilty pleasure, what with dining in your pj’s, lingering over the Sunday New York Times, indulging in a sweet treat you might otherwise avoid because it’s not part of your diet plan and all.  To enjoy the experience fully, however, we think you need to rid your mind of guilt, and these Wisconsin B&Bs are here to help you with that.  Phipps Inn in Hudson always provides the option of breakfast in bed and about two-thirds of guests take them up on the offer.  At the Oscar H. Hanson House B&B in Cambridge, not only can you request breakfast in bed, you can request breakfast on the porch or the patio if you prefer.  Guests staying in the suites at Eagle Harbor Inn in Door County will hear a light knock on their door at 8 a.m. to signal their homemade breakfast basket has arrived, with Door County Cherry granola and Door County cherry cider among the goodies.  At the Black Walnut Guest House in Sturgeon Bay, the innkeepers there exclusively serve breakfast to the room every morning rather than providing a dining room option, noting that “everyone loves this feature!”  The Brayton B&B in Oshkosh and the Franklin Victorian B&B in Sparta are also on the breakfast in bed bandwagon. So enjoy this simple gesture of hospitality knowing it’s delivered with good wishes for a guilt-free getaway.

Funny Videos on Why B&Bs Are a Better Way to Stay – Part 1

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

If you’re a loyal Wisconsin B&B traveler, you already have your reasons for choosing inns over hotels.  Like quiet ambience, free wi-fi, gourmet breakfast, luxury linens, big screen TVs, connection to local history and culture, and friendly innkeepers.  But for the rest of the traveling public who’ve not yet crossed a B&B threshold, it may simply be a case of the unknown or that a B&B just never entered their consideration set. Well, our trade organization, the Professional Association of Innkeepers International, put out a series of videos on YouTube that we think are a hoot showing why a B&B is a better way to stay.  Here are links to our favorites regarding the food experience.  Enjoy and feel free to forward to that friend of yours whom you’ve been trying to convince to give B&Bs a try.  Real Breakfast   Real Food  Great Coffee

By the way, fourteenWisconsin B&B inns actually have full restaurants on site.

Are You Ruled by Your Heart or the Calendar?

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday of October.  Easy, right, especially when it comes to planning a romantic weekend getaway.  Not so for Valentine’s Day.  This year it falls on a Tuesday.  We asked our innkeepers if couples travel for Valentine’s Day even when it falls midweek.  The answer: Not so much.  Seems the weekend before and the weekend after are big with couples celebrating their love for each other.  Which is actually good news a) if you’re a traditionalist and think romance should be duly observed on February 14, no matter the day of the week; or b) if you’re able to sneak away midweek with the one you love.  Perhaps decide which region of the state you’d like to escort your sweetheart to, and then start researching inns for one that you’ll both love.

Here’s another option for those who like to hand a present to their partner – gift a Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association gift certificate as a token of how much you love traveling as a twosome.  Together you can choose a Romance Package that fits your mood and your schedule.  You must take a look at the romance offerings from Lazy Cloud B&B in Lake Geneva.  We’re intrigued by the “Enchanted Evening” romantic board game!  At the Door County Lighthouse Inn, the winery tour and cozy sleigh ride sound pretty wonderful.  The in-room massages included in the “Enhance the Romance Package” package from Westport B&B in Manitowoc would be especially relaxing for couples looking to slow down and reconnect.
