Head Out on the Highway

So often we tout the bike trails in Wisconsin and suggest ideas for biking between B&Bs. Time to give some due to the other two-wheeled form of travel – motorcycling. We just learned that seven communities in the region of western Wisconsin known as the “driftless area” - an area untouched by glaciers and the drift deposits left by glaciers, and notable for deeply carved valleys - have banded together to promote “Cycle Driftless Destinations.” The seven cities are Sparta, La Crosse, Black River Falls, Hillsboro, Tomah, Onalaska and Trempealeau, and they’ve pooled resources to produce an area map showing five interconnected routes that circle through the back roads of the region. Sounds like a wonderful way to while away a weekend. Of course, lodging will be required and that’s where our lovely Wisconsin B&Bs come into play. We recommend a stay at the Franklin Victorian B&B in Sparta for starters, where they offer inside secure motorcycle storage. There’s also Grapevine Log Cabins and Justin Trails B&B. In La Crosse, choose between two inns which are both listed on the National Historic Register – Four Gables B&B and Wilson Schoolhouse Inn. On to Onalaska, where the Lumber Baron Inn offers water views of Lake Onalaska, or you can opt for a farmhouse getaway at Rainbow Ridge Farms. Happy (motor) cycling.

See Which B&Bs Garnered “Best of the Midwest”

The editors of Midwest Living have just released their annual “Best of the Midwest” issue and we offer hearty congratulations to these highly deserving member B&Bs: Where to eat in Bayfield: Rittenhouse Inn. The editors called it one of their all-time favorites with wraparound porch and luxe rooms. Where to stay in Door County: Door County Lighthouse Inn, Eagle Harbor Inn and White Gull Inn all made the list! Top kid-friendly stops in Wisconsin: Rainbow Ridge Farms B&Bin La Crosse, thanks to what the editors call a “go-ahead-and-get-dirty-attitude.” [caption id="attachment_1137" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Rainbow Ridge Farms B&B in Onalaska is very kid-friendly!! In every sense of the term![/caption]

Which Wisconsin City Was Named the Most Romantic in America?

La Crosse, Wisconsin is known for its state parks, dynamite bike trails and cruises on the mighty Mississippi.  And for being the most romantic city in America.  This sweet honor was bestowed by Redbox, the movie rental company, based on the number of romantic comedy DVD rentals from the city. Looking for a La Crosse B&B getaway that has romance written all over it?  Try the Wilson Schoolhouse Inn, an old school house that rents to one party only, so you’ll have the entire inn to yourself.   The Four Gables B&B is on the National Register of Historic Places, with suites furnished with couples in mind.  In nearby Onalaska, the Lumber Baron Inn, also on the National Register, will make you feel like the royal newlyweds with their afternoon high tea, plus all the bedrooms have views of Lake Onalaska.  We’re thinking a B&B weekend in La Crosse could be a great anniversary gift to the one you love, hint, hint.
