The Lazy Cloud Lodge building has a great deal of a history behind it. It was built in the early 1920's as a polo lodge for the Uilhlein Family. They owned the Chicago Branch of Schlitz Brewery Company. The Uihlein's had about 88 acres in the Lake Geneva area at the time. Some of the rooms were stables for the horses, some of them stored grain. In fact, the Hayloft Suite was actually a hayloft in itself. The lodge is a "Cape Cod" style building. In fact, the first time you see it from the road it will appear small from the front, but the Uihlein's built it to face the polo fields and not the road itself. The Paul Newman Suite is named that because in 1950, the actor Paul Newman had stayed here at one time!! Early in Newman's acting career, he played at the Summer Stock at the Belfry Theater in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. From what we gathered at the time, Paul Newman was poor and mowed the lawn in exchange for rent. Unfortunately, he hasn't been back to mow the lawn since!! Additionally, there has been another famous person who has stayed here. J.D. Salinger from Dublin, stayed in the Log Cabin Suite for one entire summer while he was writing the book "Catcher In The Rye" . | |||||||||||||||||||
