WANT TO GET MARRIED AT A WISCONSIN B&B?
THE STATE’S B&B ASSOCIATION SAYS THESE 14 INNS ARE PERFECT FOR YOUR I DO’S
The bed & breakfast industry already has a sweet reputation for catering to couples in love. Think charming inns, whether historic or contemporary, quiet breakfasts, manicured gardens, and bedrooms with ensuite baths appointed with high-end linens and comfy featherbeds. So it’s only natural that innkeepers would expand on the romantic appeal of their properties with forays into the destination wedding business. The Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association informally surveyed its nearly 200 member inns to see which innkeepers really love hosting weddings, as evidenced by having a wedding planner on staff, officiating the ceremony themselves, or even baking the wedding cakes. Here is their list, in alphabetical order, of the top 14 B&Bs where the owners are clearly romantics at heart. For more romantic B&Bs, search by amenities that include weddings, elopement and honeymoons.
Apple Tree Lane, Waupaca This 1880s Victorian farmhouse with 400 feet of Crystal River frontage is a pretty venue for indoor and outdoor weddings. Turns out the tradition of hosting nuptials here goes back to the 1890s when the home’s original owners, the Churchill family, hosted their daughter’s wedding at the home. This concierge-style inn also offers in-room spa services, makeup application for the bride and bridesmaids, and memory gift baskets delivered to guests' rooms.
Bowman’s Oak Hill B&B, Wisconsin Dells Hold your ceremony on the lovingly cared for park-like grounds of the B&B or at a nearby country church built in 1875. Innkeeper David Bowman will happily perform the ceremony – he’s an ordained minister. Wife Nancy Bowman is a home chef extraordinaire and won the state’s 2009 B&B recipe cook-off for her Wild Rice Cran-Apple Breakfast Bake.
Fountain Chateau, Hustler The rooms here are themed to travel, art, music and literature. Think Elizabeth Barrett Browning, George Gershwin, Monet and the like. The innkeepers are set up to host weddings up to 40 guests. Be sure to ask for their help with the music, as the B&B regularly hosts music events throughout the year and the owner, a former singer with Amy Grant and Anne Murray, has a “good ear” for wedding tunes.
Green Fountain Inn, Waupaca This inn has a restaurant and bakery right on premise. Have them make your wedding cake using their very own butter cream frosting. The restaurant seats 50, and the tables will be set with antique dishes and silver flatware reflecting the era of the inn, built circa 1908.
Hamilton House, Whitewater The accommodations in this 1860s Second Empire mansion are remarkable on their own - eight guest rooms, all with private baths and most with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. Imagine being escorted down the formal staircase as a string quartet serenades the wedding guests. Choose a formal sit-down dinner for 20 or a reception for 50 with guests mingling in the gardens and parlors while enjoying elegant hors d’oeuvres.
Hollyberry Inn, Hayward Whether you choose an intimate candlelight ceremony or a photo-worthy garden ceremony, the innkeepers really work at taking care of all the details to make this most memorable day stress-free. In fact, their motto is: “Drop your worries in the corner and leave them for us to sweep away. We'll take it from here.”
Honeybee Inn, Horicon Who could resist a wedding package with a name like “Honey Bee Mine.” It includes a private ceremony for the couple and four guests in the inn’s elegant living room with fireplace, flowers for the bride and groom, photos, local officiate, wedding cake, beverage, catered dinner, one dozen roses in the honeymooners’ suite, rose petal turndown service and more.
Oscar H Hanson House, Cambridge Innkeeper Mary Jane Mihajlovic is an ordained minister and is happy to take couples through a strength-based coaching session leading in to the marriage. The town literally grew up around this 1883 mansion, which is situated in a quiet and especially quaint neighborhood. The B&B’s front parlor with its lovely stained glass windows is appropriately converted into a chapel with seating for 30.
Rittenhouse Inn, Bayfield Couples can exchange vows in the music room, on the carved oak staircase in the foyer, on the front porch filled with hanging baskets of flowers overlooking the lake, or in the garden with fountain and pergola providing the ambiance. Innkeeper Jerry Phillips is even available to officiate, and there is a wedding and events coordinator right on staff.
Stewart Inn, Wausau This 1906 historic Craftsman masterpiece is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by George W. Maher, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. All events include the use of five guest rooms for two nights. A wedding in the Drawing Room is highly recommended, with the incredible fused-glass fireplace and Tiffany tulip chandeliers providing all the romantic atmosphere one could ask for.
Westphal Mansion, Hartford A stately English Tudor mansion perched high on a hill overlooking the historic downtown, this B&B is ideal for small weddings, with full concierge service offered. The owners have retained all the original architectural features including the graceful high ceilings, finely detailed carved plaster moldings, natural oak woodwork and vintage mantel surrounds.
White Lace Inn, Sturgeon Bay More than 700 couples have been married here and it’s been a honeymoon destination since the early 1900s. Large by B&B standards, this Victorian inn has 18 guest rooms spread out over four turn-of-the-century neighboring homes. While they are not set up for receptions you can hold your ceremony in the garden gazebo or in front of the fireplace in the parlor and there’s no additional charge for this service.
White Rose Inns, Wisconsin Dells The incredible view to the Wisconsin River is the selling point here. Brides can choose to have the ceremony in the wedding chapel with banquet hall, outside in the adjacent park, or in the property’s Secret Garden. There’s a wedding coordinator on staff to take the worry out and put the enchantment in. Best of all the wedding cakes are made by the fabulous pastry chefs at The Cheese Factory Restaurant, also in Wisconsin Dells.
Willow Pond B&B, Waupaca Plan the ceremony by the gazebo with nearby pond and waterfalls to provide a tranquil touch, or in the barn for some rustic elegance. The farmhouse, built in 1901, is a veritable showcase of the owners’ antique furniture collection.
