Bicycling Crawford County

If the landscapes of Crawford County offer a study in contrasts, then the sensations experienced while biking the ridge tops and river valleys are no exception. The burning in your legs climbing a summit earns you a view from the top, while the sweat on your brow evaporates in the cool coulee air on the way down. Exhilaration may not have been invented in Crawford County, but you feel its presence.

One look at the Crawford County Bicycle Map will tell you as much, with topographical profiles that look like a plot of the Dow Jones Industrials; lots of ups and downs. But the faint of heart reap no reward without an investment. So, saddle up!

If variety remains the preferred choice on your spice rack, Crawford County has the diversity to suit your tastes. The Crawford County bicycle route system uses âroads as routes,â lesser traveled township and county roads that allow you to experience the diverse character of the countyâs back roads and small communities.

The system consists of eight distinct loops connected by a central corridor that parallels the Kickapoo River from Soldiers Grove to Wauzeka. Extending from the Kickapoo Valley, each loop explores a different facet and view of the county. The west loops steer you toward the Mississippi River, with jaw-dropping overlooks of the river and county landscape. The east loops guide you along quiet pastures and secluded farms. Pick a new loop and you choose a different palette of colors and subjects to paint your own private landscape.

If youâre less ambitious like me, you can choose an elevation and stick to it. The Kickapoo Corridor offers a few rolling hills and challenging climbs, but generally stays in the valley on the northern portions West Point Road and River Road between Gays Mills and Soldiers Grove follow the Kickapoo closely, with the river tagging along as a riding companion.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the annual Kickapoo BRAVE Ride on Sept 18. The ride features a choice between four great routes through Crawford County, followed by a Harvest Dinner that evening. And donât tell anyone I told you this, but you can also use the Bicycle Map as a guide for some wonderful road trips in the car! Driftless Wisconsin rewards all who sample her variety, and no one will go home hungry for more stunning scenery.

Check out the Crawford County Bicycle Map: http://www.driftlesswisconsin.com/images/driftless/Crawford/crawfordcountybicyclemap.pdf

Tell us about your favorite bicycle rides in Driftless Wisconsin. If you want to keep the locations secret, just change the names to protect the innocent.

Candlelight skiing, hiking and snowshoeing events will be held at a number of state parks and properties early next year, including an event at Big Foot Beach State Park in Lake Geneva. Facebook photo - See more at: http://www.gazettextra.com/article/20131227/WC/131229831#sthash.jKuNqlhB.dpuf

- People looking for an opportunity to break in their new cross-country skis or snowshoes or just getting out on their tried-and-true equipment will have plenty of opportunities this winter with 27 candlelight skis, hikes or snowshoes scheduled at Wisconsin state parks and other Department of Natural Resources properties, including sites in Lake Geneva and Eagle.

Once again this year, early snows have blanketed the entire state, so most state parks and forests with ski trails have been able to groom and track the trails. While most of the events include options for skiing and hiking or snowshoeing, some trails are skiing only and some are hiking or snowshoeing only.

Enjoy the quiet beauty within the white cedar forest on 775 acres of land all year round. Heckrodt Wetland Reserve has 3 miles of hiking trails with elevated boardwalks to keep your feet dry in a 76 acre forested wetland, meadow, and open water. This reserve is home to a variety of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Turtles are often seen sunning on logs in the ponds, and the forested wetland habitat makes for great bird watching. Miles of trails provide the wanderer with scenic views of the Fox River and its islands. High Cliff State Park is located on the shores of Lake Winnebago with 15 miles of trails. How wonderful that the city of Appleton is connected by bike trails which go right in front of our inn.
