Therefore, we have been making improvements to better serve our guests and the environment. Here are six steps included in our inn's environmental policy and helpful for others to live the GREEN life. We want to include you in our environmental efforts during your stay. 1. We have an optional towel and linen reuse program. We also suggest to not run water in the sink, shower, & tub unnecessarily. We ask our guests to place their bath towels, etc. on the floor if they want them laundered. We do not change linens nightly, but at check out or unless requested by the guest. 2. Help us recycle your plastic, glass, metal, & paper by separating them in our recycle bin located in the kitchenette on the second floor. We compost fruit & vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, paper, & cardboard. We have containers labeled with the recycle logo for everyone's use by the inn's back door. Housekeeping can recycle room trash for your convenience. We use compost to fertilize our flower beds and vegetable garden. 3. Help us conserve energy consumption by turning off lights, room heaters, fireplace, and TVs in your room, when you are not there. By changing our light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, we can save approximately 300 pounds of carbon dioxide and $60 per year. 4. Unplug appliances when not in use. We unplug each TV, small appliance, and microwave to save energy which would be consuming energy even if that appliance wasn't being used. 5. Don't buy bottled water! We are filling reusable, sanitized bottles and provide chilled water. It costs energy to produce bottled water. 6. Get on your bike! We can offer bike trail suggestions in the Fox Valley. We became members of the Travel Green Wisconsin program in 2007. It is an important program and to let guests that know we are trying to do the right things to better their stay with us along with our Earth. As a member of Travel Green Wisconsin, Franklin Victorian Bed and Breakfast have made many changes and continue to make changes that will help us in the program to exceed a better store each year. We have switched to CFL bulbs on the property, placed recycling bins in the guest's rooms, guest areas and our kitchen; replace water bottles with water coolers and reusable mugs and water glasses readily available. We use all earth friendly Shaklee Cleaning products. In larger ticket items we have replaced window a/c, hot water heaters, washer, dryer, furnace and central a/c to the most Energy Star and efficiency we could. Our bills are showing us we did the right thing. We have more recyclable cans for pick up than trash. Our guests really appreciate the efforts we go to, and every year, we work on ways to improve upon them. We have had guests write in guest books and complete reviews about how they found us on Travel Green Wisconsin and write on how they appreciate our "Green" efforts. We are located in the "Driftless" area of Southwest Wisconsin where silent sports like biking, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, birding, cross-country skiing and shoe shoeing are done. Sparta is known as "The Bicycling Capital of America" and is home to the first rails to trail conversion the Elroy-Sparta State Trail with over 101 miles of connecting trails. CFL’s do a great job of lighting. The yard may not always be the greenest but it is a work in progress to plant it with perennials that don’t need to be watered every day.
