Wisconsin Bike Trails you Really Must Ride This Summer

There are a number of ways to enjoy Wisconsin, but one of our favorite activities that can be enjoyed virtually anywhere in the state is biking.  Whether you're an avid cyclist training for an event and need to log some miles on your vacation, or whether you just enjoy leisurely rides in the countryside, there are plenty of delightful Wisconsin bike trails to explore around the state. What's better, is that many of these incredible trails wind their way through some of the most scenic parts of the state, giving you a true appreciation for just how pretty the state of Wisconsin is.

Wisconsin Bike Trails to Explore This Summer

In fact, Wisconsin is one of the best states in the nation for biking, thanks in large part to the nation's Rails-to-Trails Conservancy program. There are 41 state-level Wisconsin bike trails, and most of them are rail-trails.  Altogether, there are more than 90 Wisconsin bike trails stretching across the state - and truly probably many more we don't even know about. Needless to say, you have a lot of options before you.

Of course, there are a few big-name Wisconsin Bike Trails, like the Elroy-Sparta Trail, that we think you just shouldn't miss.  But, apart from that, there are a number of small and equally as incredible trails to enjoy. As always, your Innkeeper is your best local resource! We've gathered up 24 of our favorite Wisconsin bike trails from around the state by region, starting off with the most popular trails in the area, and highting a few others you may not have heard of.  We've also linked to the nearest Bed and Breakfasts, to make finding and choosing an adventure even easier.  Happy riding!

Southwestern Wisconsin Bike Trails

The Elroy-Sparta State Trail in Sparta, first built in 1965 and the first of the popular rails-to-trails program is one of the most popular Wisconsin bike trails, and for good reason. The trail is famous for its 3 intact rock tunnels, which are each over 140 years old. Their dark, cool interiors provide a welcome respite on a hot day, too.  Along the way, scenic views of Wisconsin's rural communities will certainly delight.

Other great trails in southwestern Wisconsin include the following:

  • The 400 State Trail near Reedsburg offers a beautiful ride through Wetlands, wildlife, sandstone bluffs, rolling croplands, and pastures. In other words, it's the best of Wisconsin on one great trail.
  • Great River State Trail offers incomparable views of the backwater areas of the Mississippi River, and also offers extraordinary opportunities for bird watching along the Mississippi Flyway.
  • La Crosse River State Trail near La Crosse serves as a great connector trail to those looking to do longer rides in the area, especially if you want to tackle the Elroy Sparta Trail and the Great River State Trail.
  • Mountain bikers won't want to miss their opportunity to bike the Kickapoo Valley Reserve here. It's one of the most beautiful parts of Wisconsin's Driftless Region.

Great places to stay near these trails include the following Inns: Justin Trails Resort in Sparta; Westby House Inn B&B in Westby; Four Gables Bed and Breakfast in La Crosse; Cream Pitcher Bed and Breakfast in Blue River; Sheer Memories' Guest Cottage in Muscoda.

Biking in Southern Wisconsin (South-Central and South-East)

The Badger State Trail starts in Madison and heads south to the Illinois border, passing farmlands, woods, rolling hills, scenic meadows, and plenty of small rural communities along the way. One of the most popular features on the trail is a 1,200-foot tunnel, unique in that it curves in the middle so you can't see the opposite end of the tunnel as you enter it.

Other great trails in this region include the following:

  • The Capital City State Trail in Madison offers a beautiful way to tour the city, and also connects up to many of the other trails mentioned here for extended trips.
  • Governor Dodge State Park is a truly beautiful park to explore. Spend a day biking among the steep hills, bluffs, and valleys, stopping along the way to enjoy a restful afternoon break at the area's waterfall and lakes. It's one of the most popular Wisconsin State Parks for a reason!
  • Military Ridge State Trail near Blue Mounds is an old military trail dating back to 1855. There are several observation areas just off the trail, too, which allows you to view the wildlife and other geological features of the area.
  • The Sugar River State Trail in New Glarus is part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and is a great place to see wildlife.  There are also a number of scenic bridges to ride over along the way.
  • Riding along the Wild Goose State Trail, near Horicon Marsh, is one of the best ways to experience the Marsh and enjoy the 250+ bird species found in this area.

Great places to stay near these trails include the following Inns: The Buckingham Inn in Madison; Hotel Ruby Marie in Madison; The Livingston Inn in Madison; The Speckled Hen Inn in Madison; Honeybee Inn in Horicon; Silver Star B&B in Spring Green; Cameo Rose Victorian Country Inn in Belleville.

Central Wisconsin Bike Trails (and east-central)

Glacial Drumlin State Trail offers 52 miles of trails between Wisconsin's two biggest urban areas, Madison and Waukesha (just outside of Milwaukee). Don't forget to stop and take a selfie at Rock Lake Bridge near Lake Mills.  As you move out of the city, there are plenty of ponds, rivers, and marshes to enjoy, along with the variety of wildlife that calls them home.

More Wisconsin bike trails in central Wisconsin include:

  • Devil's River State Trail, near Manitowoc, is a beautiful rural trail that features two dramatic railroad trestles crossing the Devil's River and tributaries.
  • Kettle Morain State Forest - Northern Unit near West Bend is an incredibly beautiful area renownded for its scenic natural beauty and home to incredible biodiversity.
  • Kohler-Andre State Park in Sheboygan explores the scenic shoreline of Lake Michigan with its majestic sand dunes, miles of stuning beach, and sparkling blue water.

Great places to stay near these Wisconsin bike trails include the following Inns: Westport Bed and Breakfast in Manitowoc; Red Forest Bed and Breakfast in Two Rivers; Rochester Inn in Sheboygan Falls; Fargo Mansion Inn in Lake Mills; Sweet Autumn Inn in Lake Mills.

Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge

Horicon Marsh, known as the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the country, encompasses 33,000 acres of land; perfect for a day of hiking, boating, birding, photography, fishing, and wildlife viewing.  By far, the most popular activity at Horicon Marsh is birding. This protected land is home to a broad variety of marsh birds, including ducks, geese, pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, and so much more.  In addition to marsh-loving birds, the surrounding woodlands provide excellent habitat for a variety of songbirds, especially during the spring and fall bird migrations. More than 300 species of birds have been found at Horicon Marsh over the years, including a healthy variety of rare and endangered bird species. Beyond Horicon Marsh, a birding hotspot in Wisconsinbirds, there is plenty of other wildlife to enjoy at Horicon Marsh. There are quite a few nocturnal species, but daytime visitors also often see white-tailed deer, muskrats, mink, and river otters in the shallow waters.

There are 5 miles of hiking trails throughout Horicon Marsh, including a 1400 ft. accessible boardwalk, which allows you to explore its features and inhabitants in more depth. The Horicon Habitat Trail is one of the most popular. Cyclists can also enjoy views of the Horicon Marsh from Wild Goose State Trail, along the western edge of the marsh. But, for a truly up-close experience, consider renting a canoe to navigate your way around the marsh. The Horicon Marsh Canoe Trail is an interpretive guide that will help you make the most of your time on the water. You can also take a guided boat tour through Horicon Marsh aboard an environmentally friendly pontoon boat. These tours operate seasonally, from May 1 - October 13, 2019. They offer a variety of tours, including a birding adventure, a sunset cruise, and a seasonal autumn sights tour in September and October. In addition to these experiences, Friends of Horicon Marsh also offers an array of exceptional events and programs, geared toward helping you make the most of your time at this incredible place.

Plan Now for Fall Migration at Horicon Marsh

Now is a great time to plan ahead for the fall bird migration at Horicon Marsh. It's a bird lovers dream! Horicon Marsh is well-known for its flocks of Canadian Geese. In fact, each fall, the world's largest flock of Canadian Geese migrates through these very lands, with their peak numbers reaching upwards of 200,000 birds! The geese start to show up in early to mid-September, with their population peaking in mid-October. As an added bonus, fall colors also reach their peak around the same time, making for a truly beautiful and memorable getaway. The Best Girlfriend Getaway is in Wisconsin

In a state as diverse and beautiful as Wisconsin, it's easy to plan a girlfriend getaway that will make every member of your group happy. We recommend you spend your girlfriend getaway off the beaten path, in the smaller, vibrant communities of Wisconsin. Here are a few ways to do exactly that:

Sip & Swirl Your Way around Wisconsin

There is no shortage of good wineries and breweries in Wisconsin. You can spend days traveling around the state sipping and tasting your way through many of them. While the titan's of Wisconsin's brew scene, Pabst and Miller are still around, the brewing scene in Wisconsin has seen tremendous growth at the local level. In most cities, you can now find at least one microbrewery. Visiting these microbreweries and getting to know their towns and regions is an excellent way to experience the best of Wisconsin. We wrote a recent blog about some of the top breweries to visit in Wisconsin.

The state's wineries are just as exciting. Visiting a few of these gems during an afternoon or two is the perfect compliment to a girlfriend getaway. There are over 100 wineries, but some of the lesser-known and worthwhile stops include Wollersheim Winery & Distillery in Prairie du Sac, Belle Vinez Winery in Hudson, Chateau St. Croix Winery in St. Croix Falls, Cambridge Winery, DC Estate Winery in Beloit, Staller Estate Winery in Delavan, and Lewis Station Winery, the state's first craft winery, located in Lake Mills.

Get Outside and Be Adventurous

Whatever part of the state you find yourself in, you'll find an incredible range of outdoor activities to enjoy. For example, try the Waupaca and Chain O'Lakes area of central Wisconsin. It's breathtakingly beautiful and fit for the most adventurous of groups. Maybe you want to try your hand at some fun water activities, such as Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUPing)? You can even throw a little yoga in for fun! Or maybe you and your girlfriends want to rent a pontoon boat and head out on the lakes for the day? Cool off and take a swim at one of the sandbars along the way.

SUPing in Waupaca isn't the only way to enjoy the water in Wisconsin, either. The Northwestern part of the state is known for its rugged shoreline along Lake Superior, while the Northeast boasts nearly 300 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan. Both areas are ripe with rivers and lakes to explore, too. But for a tranquil trip down some of the most scenic stretches of river in the state, you can't beat staying in the Driftless Region in the southwestern part of the state. Here, you'll find the gently meandering waters of the Kickapoo River near Ontario, to name but one. At night, the quiet countryside of the Driftless region is perfect for stargazing and enjoying time together around a bonfire. These experiences and more can be had at select Bed and Breakfasts in Wisconsin.

Get Adventurous on a girlfriend getaway to WisconsinAnother hidden gem of Wisconsin is the ruggedly beautiful town of Wausau. You can get adventurous at their acclaimed Whitewater Park, take to the hills of Rib Mountain State Park, or spend some time browsing their incredible museums in downtown, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Other great places to hike or take nature walks around the state include Wildcat Mountain State Park near Ontario, Devils Lake State Park near Baraboo, Governor Dodge State Park just outside of Madison, the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest near West Bend, and Horicon Marsh near Horicon.

If biking is more your speed, head over to the Elroy-Sparta Trail near Sparta. It is a former railway that turned to a multi-use trail in the beautiful Driftless Area. Other great cycling trails include the La Crosse River State Trail, the Great River State Trail near La Crosse, and the Sugar River State Trail in Southern Wisconsin near New Glarus.

Don't Forget to add in some Shopping

We'd be remiss not to mention some of the top towns for shopping in Wisconsin. When you and your girlfriends are ready to do a little shopping, head to the Fox Cities. This collection of small towns is known as "Wisconsin's Shopping Place," and for good reason. The Fox Cities, which includes cities like Appleton, is in the northeastern part of the state.  It is made up of about 20 different small communities, each offering up a different mix of shopping. From large malls to quaint boutiques, you and your best girlfriends will have a wonderful time getting to know each of these wonderful Wisconsin communities. For other great shopping ideas, refer to Travel Wisconsin's guide to small town shopping around the state.

Pamper Yourself at a Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast

There are a number of spas around the state who put wellness at the forefront of everything they do. But many Wisconsin Bed and Breakfasts make wellness a central part of their experience, too.  That's why we're among the best places to stay in Wisconsin! These Inns and the services they offer make getting pampered while on vacation even easier. Several Inns offer in-room massages and services, or they partner with local businesses or can refer you to local spas. Some even offer full wellness retreats and services so your girlfriend getaway can be focused exactly where it should be; on you and your friendships.

Whether the focus of your girlfriend getaway is deep relaxation, wine and conversation, or finding the adventure of a lifetime, the state of Wisconsin and our member Bed and Breakfasts are here to help. Just as each region in the state has its own charms, so to do each of our lodging properties. A vacation in Wisconsin can be as interesting and unique as your group of girlfriends, and our innkeepers are here to help! Don't wait; book your girlfriend getaway to Wisconsin today!

Wisconsin Biking Trails and B&B's Just Seem To Go Together

Some things just seem to go together and biking and B&B's is one of those must-do's. Why? To start with, Innkeepers make it their job to know their area. They have all the innsider tips of favorite biking trails, scenic outlooks, and off-the-beaten path recommendations they love to share. Many of them are outdoor enthusiasts too, making them the expert. As a result, they will also know where to go for grabbing a cool beverage, lunch, or a special shop, close to the trails.

Besides that, nothing beats returning to the B&B after your afternoon of touring these Wisconsin biking trails. Innkeepers often provide beverages, snacks, and a comfortable place to enjoy them. You can enjoy sun tea on the patio or a glass of wine on the covered porch before dinner. A restful night sleep, followed by a gourmet breakfast, is just what a B&B offers before starting your next day's adventures. Tip: ask if there is bike parking; many times B&B's have a space for you and your bike!

Multi-Destination Getaway: The Driftless Area

Multi-Destination Getaway: The Driftless Area [caption id="attachment_1794" align="aligncenter" width="300"]WI Driftless Region WI Driftless Region[/caption] Taking a page out of European travel, why not plan a trip that takes you to multiple destinations instead of just staying put. The Driftless Area in the southwest part of the state, with its deeply carved river valleys untouched by glaciers, would be a great place to give it a try.

If you’re looking for a stateside getaway that carries the same types of discoveries you’d expect to find on a multi-destination European holiday, we bring you the Driftless region of Wisconsin. The last continental glacier bypassed this area, giving it its distinctive terrain of deeply carved valleys and the largest concentration of cold water streams in the world. The earliest inhabitants of this southwest corner of the state were Native American Mound Builders. Today the region is home to hundreds of artists who take inspiration from the hills and valleys and the Kickapoo River and mighty Mississippi. [caption id="attachment_1795" align="alignnone" width="300"]bikers The Driftless Region in Wisconsin offers a variety of choices for bike riders, from rugged mountain trails to challenging on-road routes to constructed bike trails.[/caption] Bird migrations are a mainstay in the spring, farmers’ markets abound, and mountain biking is plentiful. And you can forget malls, as independent boutiques and Amish goods define the shopping experience here. As for places to rest your head, there’s the Tritsch House B&B in the Mississippi River town of Alma. It’s a Queen Anne house hugged by river bluffs. Walnut Ridge Log Cabin Guest House in Platteville offers two handcrafted log cabins set on six wooded country acres. The Driftless Region is a unique part of Wisconsin's geography.  An area where visitors will find a wide variety of places to explore.  The Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association member Inns in the Southwest region of Wisconsin are also plentiful, each one of them unique in their own way.  With a little research, we are confident you will find one that suits your personality.  We always like to remind our readers that all WBBA members are licensed, inspected and insured.  So rest asured, you will get a good night's sleep when you stay at a WBBA B&B, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated the next morning.  Are you ready to Seek the Unique?WBBA Seek the Unique

Loving This New Kind of Honeymoon

Loving This New Kind of Honeymoon If you’re one of those who said “yes” over the holidays or Valentine’s Day, we have some ideas for an adventure honeymoon, a trend that’s on the rise and that we happen to love. [caption id="attachment_1783" align="alignnone" width="300"]She Said Yes! She Said Yes![/caption]

The mere mention of the term “bed and breakfast” often elicits thoughts of “romance and relaxation,” meaning ideal for proposals, elopements, small wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, and vow renewals. But for honeymoons, more and more couples are booking adventure getaways to celebrate this most happy moment in their lives. [caption id="attachment_1784" align="alignleft" width="300"]Justin Trails Resort Paul Bunyan Cabin Justin Trails Resort Paul Bunyan Cabin[/caption] If you’re a twosome with your heart set on an active honeymoon, here are four Wisconsin inns we think you’ll fall in love with, starting with Justin Trails Resort in Sparta. This inn calls a 200-acre parcel of rolling hills home. You can play disc golf on their course, hike, bike the nearby Elroy-Sparta trail, and tour the farm. Oh, one more thing, they “upscaled” a barn into an elegant wedding venue, in case you’re still deciding where to say your “I do’s.” Canyon Road B&B in Turtle Lake is tucked back in the woods and sits on a sparkling little lake. Fish off the pier, help yourself to a canoe, and hike and golf in the area to your heart’s content. A nice handful of winery and brewery tours in the area could make for an enjoyable day itinerary too. [caption id="attachment_1785" align="alignright" width="300"]Canyon Road Inn Binoculars Canyon Road Inn Binoculars[/caption]   Inn at Pinewood in Eagle River is that quintessential Wisconsin northwoods destination. This log cabin-style resort, originally built in the 1930s as a hunting and fishing lodge, is situated on a private lake so do a little kayaking, swimming, and, of course, fishing. Devote one day to hiking and biking the Nicolet National Forest, just two miles from inn. [caption id="attachment_1786" align="alignnone" width="300"]Inn at Pinewood in Eagle River, WI Inn at Pinewood in Eagle River, WI[/caption] Our fourth recommendation is Blacksmith Inn On the Shore on the Shore in Door County. [caption id="attachment_1789" align="alignright" width="300"]Blacksmith Inn On the Shore Breakfast on the Balcony Blacksmith Inn On the Shore Breakfast on the Balcony[/caption] As the name states, it’s located right on the shore of Lake Michigan in a little burg known as Baileys Harbor. This area of the state is made for adventures, like hiking the Ridges Sanctuary nature preserve, biking the scenic trails, doing a little lighthouse sightseeing, and kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing on the big lake. [caption id="attachment_1788" align="alignleft" width="300"]Couple Paddleboarding Couple Paddleboarding[/caption] Every newlywed couple wants their honeymoon to be as unique as they are.  Relaxation and romance allowed after that much adventure!  The B&B's in the Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association would love to help you create that unique experience.  A great reason to plan a B&B getaway, where innkeepers are your ultimate concierge to all things local.  Another important item to point out, WBBA members are licensed, inspected and insured.  So rest assured, you will get a good night's sleep when you stay at a WBBA B&B, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated the next morning.  Are you ready to Seek the Unique?WBBA Seek the Unique

Biking is the new Golf - You Heard it from Wisconsin B&Bs

[caption id="attachment_1675" align="alignright" width="300"]Parkview B&B in Reedsburg Parkview B&B in Reedsburg[/caption] Are you more interested in wheeling along than walking along? You're not alone. Cycling is now being referred to as the new golf. Here in Wisconsin we have a great rails-to-trails bike system, 117 designated Rustic Roads spanning 669 miles through 59 counties,  plus lots of opportunities to log miles in state and county parks.  Wisconsin has some pretty awesome city cycling too. Take Madison, for example. They have a bike-share program, and commuter bike trails, with several connecting to excellent state trails, for those yearning for a longer-distance ride.  Of course, golf is pretty spectacular here too. The U.S. Open is coming to Wisconsin next year and that's after the state hosted the PGA last year.  We're so glad spring is here and we have a hunch we're not alone. Wisconsin is one of the top bicycling destinations in the U.S. and we're not making that up. Just ask the League of American Bicyclists - they are the ones doing the rankings. Old railroad beds converted to bike trails, including the famous Elroy-Sparta trail, have helped put Wisconsin on the national bike map in a big way. The Grapevine Log Cabins is almost within earshot of the Elroy-Sparta bike trail, a short 1 ½ miles, where it meets the La Crosse River Trail, and Justin Trails Resort tells their guests to make sure they don't miss the trail's 875' tunnel - it's awesome. A future addition will connect the trail with the Chippewa and Red Cedar state trails, creating a network of more than 70 miles of connected trails in the Chippewa Valley. Innkeepers who bike themselves include Heidi and Tom at the Buckingham Inn in Madison, so you'd be in great company at their B&B.  The inn provides free passes for Madison's city bike-share program for a quick ride to restaurants, the Capitol, and other Madison area attractions.   [caption id="attachment_1676" align="alignright" width="300"]Pedal'rs Inn B&B Pedal'rs Inn B&B[/caption]   We couldn't talk bicycling without mentioning the Pedal'rs Inn B&B in Wales, a bicycling inspired inn, where you can pick up the scenic Glacial Drumlin State Trail. Located just a short drive north of Milwaukee, is Hidden Serenity B&B in West Bend and the Eisenbahn, a "rails to trails" project, where you get the beauty of biking in the Kettle Moraine without the steep hills.  Many B&Bs offer relaxing massages at their inns, so inquire, just in case you need to pamper yourself after your day's ride. We're Your Sherpa for Hiking Trails in Wisconsin!

In the southern part of the state, The Roth House B&B of Soldiers Grove says there are lots of great opportunities for hiking just a short distance from the inn.  They include:  Hogback Prairie, Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and Pikes Peak State Park. All three of these provide unique opportunities to explore the Driftless Region.  Cameo Rose Victorian Inn in Belleville boasts 4 miles of beautifully groomed hiking trails right on their 120 acre wooded property.  They also have a managed forest (Gary eliminates all invasive species, prunes lower tree branches, cleans up all poison ivy, etc.) and maintains wide, mowed paths throughout the meandering hillsides complete with unique rock formations, a wide assortment of colorful songbirds, wild turkeys, hawks (even an eagle or two) and lots of deer and other wildlife. Innkeeper Donna Hofmann of Parkview B&B in Reedsburg puts in another vote for can't-miss-hiking at famous Devil’s Lake State Park and often suggests it to enthusiastic guests. Of course, it has the best rock climbing this side of the Rocky Mountains!  Continuing east, we come to Pedal'rs Inn, Wales in the Lake Country/ Kettle Moraine area. Minutes away is Lapham Peak State Park part of the Ice Age Trail. The Ice Age Trail connects with the Glacial Drumlin Trail that will bring you right to the doorstep of Pedal'rs Inn. Further to the south is the Southern Kettle Moraine with more trails to enjoy the landforms created by during the Ice Age.  Last but not certainly not least, Artesian House in Bayfield is excited to have guests experience the brand new park called Salmo Lake Walk Trail that is just across the road from Artesian House.  The new park has a bridge, boardwalk/trail down to a Lake Superior beach for a nice stroll for after breakfast.  There is a hiking trail across Hatchery Road close to Artesian House's driveway. For the perfect marriage between hiking and seeing the timeless city of Bayfield, cross Rt. 13 to Port Superior Road and head north along the water, you will pick up the Brownstone Trail that will take you into downtown Bayfield.  Bayfield Chamber of Commerce has put together a great list of trails along Lake Superior that will definitely make for an experience worth the drive north! Inside Scoop on Great Hiking Trails Part 2

We promised to pass along more innkeeper recommendations on nearby hiking trails and here they are! First we invite you to explore the trails close to the Eagle Harbor Inn, in Ephraim. Right in Ephraim there is a path that wanders through the town and up the bluff down small quiet back roads past all kinds of summer cottages and year around homes. The Bay of Green is never far from view. In fact at many places along the way it’s possible to dip your toes into that bay. There is a route that is mapped it takes a couple of hours. But, it is possible to walk small parts of the route at a time.   Also located close by is one of the best state parks in the state, Peninsula State Park. There are trails for all skill levels and they vary in length as well. The park is loaded with so much to see.  If those are trails too traveled for your taste there is Newport State Park a mere a 20 minute drive north. There you’ll find more secluded and rugged trails on the shores of Lake Michigan.  Also Whitefish Dunes State Park is located south of Jacksonport. Along with miles of trails over sand dunes and into the thickly wooded areas of the park, there are dunes along the shore for picnicking and sunning while you try to brave the icy cold waters of Lake Michigan.   A little further south in Appleton Judy Halma of the Franklin Street Inn shared with us that guests often enjoy hiking the Heckrodt Hiking Trail-76 acres of forested wetland, 3+ mile trail system allows access without getting your wet feet, located less than 5 miles from the inn.   Nearby in Oshkosh, Brayton B&B recommends The Wiouwash State Trail is a rail trail just a few short blocks from the inn. Its name is derived from the first two letters of the four counties it traverses: Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca, and Shawano. The trail is used by walkers, hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and snowmobilers during the winter months. The trail is split into two sections. The northern section runs from Aniwa to Split Rock. The southern section runs for 21 miles from Oshkosh northward to Hortonville and offers opportunities for biking, walking, jogging and bird-watching.  As it traverses the countryside, the southern section of the Wiouwash passes through a number of interesting natural habitats. Segments of the trail run through prairie and wetlands, attracting hundreds of species of birds, including sandhill cranes. The trail also crosses Dagget’s Creek, the Rat River and Black Otter Creek. It’s a scenic and relaxing journey, whether you’re on foot or two wheels.  That's all for now! Stay tuned for Part 3 for more hiking recommendations!   [caption id="attachment_1246" align="aligncenter" width="506"]Heckrodt Hiking Trail in Menasha offers great views of the diverse life in the wetlands.
