A double dose of Spring

Breakfast outdoors at Springdale Inn in Verona, and watch the resident Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Eastern Bluebirds, and Monarch and Swallowtail Butterflies as they revel in their native prairie gardens. And that’s not all! Prairie enthusiast turned Innkeeper Nancy Hylbert is known for sending you off with your own complementary starter native plant garden, which she'll dig from the extensive prairie nursery surrounding her inn. Experience the Seasons (thanks - we'll take SPRING now) at Cold Spring Inn & Vineyard in Hubertus, located on 80 acres of the Kettle Moraine watershed along the Oconomowoc River. A new boutique vineyard enhances the landscape and guests are invited to sample the wines ... now that's as "locally sourced" as you can get! Try the inn's par-3 golf green - a hole-in-one scores a free night stay! [caption id="attachment_1472" align="alignleft" width="267"]10SNEI? On the grounds of Cold Spring Inn, guests can play the par-3 golf course, work up an appetite and thirst on the tennis court, bird-watch on the extensive private trail with walking bridges over the Oconomowoc River. 10SNEI? GET REAL…BUTTER!

We’ve just heard the news that butter is back! This is good news for our tastebuds, local dairy farmers, and our health.  While butter is a fat – a natural saturated fat - the artificial substitutes like ‘partially-hydrogenated oil’ aka transfats are now officially branded by the FDA as no longer generally recognized as safe. The freshly baked (no preservatives necessary), locally sourced, bursting with natural flavor breakfasts found at our B&Bs start your Wisconsin day tastefully.  Blueberry French Toast Bake delights guests at Riverview B&B in Neshkoro – we’re sharing the recipe (found also on page 149 in the Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Cookbook) with you. Butter is back … for some of us, it never left …   [caption id="attachment_1327" align="aligncenter" width="637"]It may be cold outside, but its (French) toasty inside at Riverview B&B. Neshkoro is just 10 miles east of 39/51 on Hwy E, using the Westfield exit. It may be cold outside, but its (French) toasty inside at Riverview B&B. Coffee Snobs Welcome at Wisconsin B&Bs

Would you label yourself a coffee snob?  Not sure of the definition?  Well, if you consider a good cup of coffee the make-or-break start to your day, you probably qualify.  And, by good, we mean freshly ground beans, real cream, aromatic flavors, options for cappuccino or espresso, bottomless and piping hot.  B&Bs do coffee better than anyone else, in our humble opinion!  In Wisconsin, we salute  The Roth House - Soldiers Grove for their daily service of Organic Free Trade Artisan Roasted Kickapoo Coffee, ground fresh each day. Of the many varieties, the innkeepers note: "we have designed The Roth House Blend" using two of our favorites."  The custom blend trend continues at Stagecoach Inn-Cedarburg, with a blend of fresh ground organic coffee, roasted down the street at the Cedarburg Roastry, available all day and evening in the Inn's pub gathering area.  Each morning, Innkeepers Patti and Turner blend 3 types of coffee beans, grind fresh and serve their secret recipe during breakfast...and now sell the "Canyon Road Inn" blend in their gift shop in Turtle Lake.     We’d also like to call attention to the fine coffee roasters in the state, including Alterra, Northwestern Coffee Mills, Black Water Roasters, Berres Brothers, Door County Coffee & Tea, Great River Roasters and Johnson Brothers Coffee Roasters.  And, if anything goes into your coffee, our innkeepers say it's fresh Wisconsin cream and raw sugar. If you’re looking for a great breakfast recipe to go with your favorite coffee, then do try one of these award-winning entries from our annual B&B recipe cook-off.
